Overlook Hill covers 3-million gallon water tank

Overlook Hill is more than just a spot for an afternoon nap.

The sloping hill's soil covers massive water retention drums which store water that is used for vegetation on Public Square.

The state-of-the-art water retention system was made possible through a $3 million grant from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

The investment in green infrastructure helped to remove approximately 3 million gallons of stormwater from the combined sewer system each year.

The system is similar to rain barrels on your own home. By capturing the water for things like gardens or irrigation, homeowners can put the water to better use than simply allowing it to discharge to the local sewer system.

The underground rainwater harvesting system is part of the Sewer District's Project Clean Lake program, which is designed to reduce Lake Erie pollution by 4 billion gallons a year.
