Activities for everyone in The Square

Big day in The Square
Big day in The Square

It's been almost three years since the newly renovated Public Square was reopened welcoming visitors into an exciting new chapter in the long history for the civic space.

Six years earlier, the Group Plan Commission began working on a revitalization project that would introduce an entirely new vision for The Square.

Now that vision, first considered in 2010, has become a reality. With each day Public Square continues to come alive with a vibrancy that defines how generations of Clevelanders will view downtown Cleveland.

This summer in Cleveland, Public Square will host more than 280 events. In most cases multiple events will happen throughout the 6.5-acre park on the same day.

If you visit The Square you'll find a little something for everyone, and it's happening in every corner of the expansive, mixed use venue, that has turned into downtown Cleveland's premier outdoor park.

With summer now in full swing, The Square continues to attract hundreds of visitors each day.

One Wednesday, June 19 The Square was filled with activity, and even featured two live music performances. Square Sounds is a live music performance that happens weekdays during the lunch hour. Victor Samalot's classic rock provided a fitting soundtrack for many downtown workers who enjoyed their lunch on the patio at Rebol. On the northside of The Square, a pop-up music performance by ChamberFest Cleveland stopped passersby in their tracks as the world class musicians performed on the Quicken Loans Stage. A quartet of musicians filled the Gund Foundation Green with mesmerizing instrumental music as others shared material about upcoming concerts in the area.

Summer Splash in The Square presented by the Cleveland Foundation has quickly become downtown Cleveland's "coolest" new program.

On this day, dozens of children were on their feet, running through the signature splash pad on the Cleveland Foundation Centennial Plaza, or challenging each other with a friendly hoops competition.

Another children's program featuring ideastream and Cat in the Hat had kids participating in creative play. Kids made kazoos, played interactive games, and colored in Cat in the Hat themed books. Cleveland Public Library offered an informational exhibit which added to the experience for Summer Splash visitors. All of this combined for an exciting day in The Square representing the new normal in downtown Cleveland. The vision for a new Public Square, the goal to design a public space for everyone, and the desire to create an active city center has been realized.
